Ber Anena

Ber Anena is a Ugandan writer, editor, and performer. A 2021 graduate of Columbia’s MFA Writing program, Anena jointly won the Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature in Africa for her debut poetry collection, A Nation in Labour, in 2018. Her fiction has been shortlisted for the Commonwealth Short Story Prize and twice longlisted for the Short Story Day Africa Prize. Her prose and poetry have been featured in The AtlanticThe PlentitudesThe Kalahari Reviewadda stories, the 2013 Caine Prize anthology, New Daughters of Africa: An Anthology of New Writing by Women of African Descent, Jalada Africa, among others. Anena is working on a memoir, and her young adult novels are forthcoming from Storymoja Africa. She previously published under the name Harriet Anena.
